Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan

July 11, 2013

An early day game in Detroit meant we had to leave extremely early from Chicago, as a four and a half hour drive awaited us. As we drove through Indiana and then into Michigan, we quickly realized we would be late to the game. Not only that, but we didn’t have tickets to the game yet. I began freaking out in the car, but thankfully we managed to buy tickets online. As for being late, I just had to accept it even though it’s my biggest pet peeve.

After the long drive in, we finally made it to the Motor City and went straight to the game, which had already started. Somehow, finding parking proved to be quick and easy, and the parking was right next to the stadium. We got everything in order and rushed into the game. We had arrived in Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers.

Our seats were in right-center field, just above the big scoreboard that attracts plenty of triples in the deep corner of the outfield. The game was in the third inning when we sat down, and although I had been upset in the car, I was just glad we could make it at all. The visiting Chicago White Sox, thanks to a Josh Phegley grand slam, took a commanding lead in the game. Meanwhile, we began walking around the ballpark, and we were all absolutely stunned.

A great experience in Comerica Park.

The architecture of Comerica Park was truly magnificent. Every corner of the ballpark seemed to have a special little something that fit just right. From the huge kids area with a baseball Ferris Wheel and merry-go-round filled with tigers, to the tiger sculptures in and around the stadium, the ballpark was a true gem. My personal favorite part had to be the giant tigers outside every gate that were “purr-fect” for pictures with the family. For the first time, I found a ballpark that rivaled Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and that meant it had to be spectacular. Trust me, Comerica Park was that and more.

As the game came to an end, we took in our last moments in Comerica Park at the team store getting my second ever stamp in my Ballpark Passport and buying my mini-bat. After the game, we walked right across the street to eat at “Hockeytown,” a restaurant inspired by the beloved Detroit Red Wings that was filled with cool memorabilia. It was the perfect way to end a fantastic game-day in Detroit.

All these details make Comerica Park so special.
