This week in college football included some stunning upsets, and some unexpected close games. On Friday night in Provo, Utah, the now #25 BYU Cougars continued their success beating Houston 33-25. #8 Baylor also continued their early success, running away with a 63-21 victory over the highly over matched Buffalo Bulls.
Saturday started with College Gameday visiting Fargo, North Dakota, where the three-peat FCS champion North Dakota State Bison, hosted the second year Division 1 program Incarnate Word Cardinals. It was mostly focused on NDSU, but it was good exposure for the San Antonio school. As expected, NDSU, rolled all over UIW, winning 58-0. The other San Antonio football team, UTSA, traveled up to Stillwater to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Roadrunners fell, 43-13.
The #17 Virginia Tech Hokies, welcomed the unranked East Carolina Pirates to Blacksburg. Just one week after pulling off the biggest upset of the year so far, the Pirates stunned the Hokies themselves, hanging on for a 28-21 win. Just about 150 miles north of Blacksburg in Charlottesville, unranked Virginia pulled off the upset of the #21 Louisville Cardinals, which led to the first rushing of the field this year. In perhaps the biggest upset today, the Boston College Eagles stunned the #9 USC Trojans in Chestnut Hill, which also led to a rushing of the field by students.
There were plenty of other good games on Saturday to go around. In Columbia, #24 South Carolina battled #6 Georgia. It was a great game, and South Carolina pulled it out, 38-35. In Arlington, #12 UCLA, played the struggling Texas Longhorns. Texas put up a strong fight, but a late touchdown by the backup quarterback led UCLA to victory. Arguably the best game of the day was in College Park, Maryland. It was a back and forth affair after Maryland fought all the way back from being down 28-6. West Virginia made a game winning field goal as time expired, to beat the Terrapins, 40-37, on a rainy day in College Park.
Another day, and another bad showing for the BIG 10. The first three weeks of the season have been crazy, and there will be plenty of that left. Some games to keep on eye on next week are: Auburn visiting Kansas State, Florida State hosting Clemson, West Virginia hosting Oklahoma after a big win today, and BYU vs Virginia, in a game of two surprisingly good teams. My Upset watch for next week is in Pullman, as the Oregon Ducks pay a visit to the Washington State Cougars. Also, watch out for West Virginia hosting Oklahoma.
