Friday was an exciting day on the campus of UTSA, as Frank Wilson was named the new head coach of the Roadrunners. Earlier this month, Larry Coker stepped down as head coach, and Wilson will be his replacement.
Wilson has 20 years of coaching experience, and was most recently the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at LSU. He is widely regarded as one of the nation’s best recruiters. At his press conference, Wilson seemed optimistic about his future at UTSA. He talked about how important the possibility of being the first to win a conference championship, and the first to win a bowl game at UTSA was in bringing him to San Antonio.
“To have an opportunity to be the first to win a conference championship at this university in football, to have an opportunity to be the first to win a bowl game, all of those things appeal to this university,” says WIlson. “So when the opportunity presented itself, I could not be more excited about it. So really, really thrilled about UTSA and the future and the what we can do here.”
With five seasons as a football program, UTSA has made some historic moves, and this is yet another one. After hearing him speak to the media on Friday evening, I believe Wilson is a great hire for the Roadrunners as they look to get to the next level. He seems like he has great values, and he looked genuinely honored to be the next head coach of the Roadrunners.
“Frank Wilson is an energetic and enthusiastic coach who will be a great leader for our student-athletes,” says UTSA Athletic Director Lynn Hickey. “His hire is a coup for UTSA and the city of San Antonio and I know our fans are going to be excited.”
Wilson will look to implement similar principles that he has as a great recruiter to his coaching. He says some of the most important things in having a strong program is treating the team like family, not a business.
Recruiting will be a big part of Wilson’s coaching, and he’s already looking ahead at what’s to come in building the best team possible.
“I see potential,” says Wilson. “I see a school that’s nestled in the state of Texas. That’s fertile recruiting grounds that’s all around you.”
We won’t know how good of a coach Wilson is until the season starts in September, but as of mid-January, it looks as though UTSA made a great decision in naming Frank Wilson as their new head coach.
