I wrote this article in the September issue of The Hoof Print, which is Alamo Heights High School’s newspaper run by Kristin Cade. This year I am Co-Editor in Chief, meaning I write multiple articles per month, and they’ll often be about many topics, not just sports. Although this is my sports blog and some of these articles will not be about sports, I still want to share my writing. I hope you enjoy!
Summer is a wonderful time of year for many reasons. School is out, pools are open and there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. As much as we all love summer, especially as students, September marks the start of a new year. You might be thinking, “Isn’t January the start of a new year?” Well, according to a calendar it might be, but September is the real beginning in various ways.
For sports fans, football is back! Friday night lights shine once again at high schools across the country and shine even brighter here in Texas, Saturdays are filled with college football from before noon to past midnight and Sundays are thankfully overtaken by the National Football League. Add on NFL games on Monday and Thursday nights and there won’t be many times when a football game isn’t on somewhere. With all the games comes the never-ending job of monitoring your fantasy football and keeping up with all the breaking news. For football fanatics, summer is the longest season of the year because there’s no trace of football, but September ends their dreadful seven month nightmare that begins as soon as the Super Bowl ends. Football isn’t the only sport, however, that September treats well. Major League Baseball enters the homestretch for the playoffs with thrilling divisional matchups throughout the month and basketball and hockey fans can finally start to taste the beginning of their seasons which awaits nearby in October.
During the summer, while there’s seemingly endless time to spare, there’s nothing new on TV! All the major cable network shows end their seasons in May and go on break over the summer, which is the absolute worst timing. When there’s finally nothing to do all day, there’s nothing new to watch. But guess what? All shows start new seasons in September and new shows debut as well, so all you Modern Family, Big Bang Theory and This Is Us fans can rejoice. It’s not just scripted shows that are back; all the talent competitions like Dancing With The Stars and The Voice return as well, so make sure to plan your TV viewing schedule so you don’t miss your favorite shows.
Yet another thing that September brings is the unofficial start to holiday season. Even though Halloween is basically two full months away, pumpkins and witches begin invading department stores everywhere. And as we all know, as soon as Halloween preparations begin, you can feel Thanksgiving in the air and then it’s basically Christmas. If we’re being honest, Christmas begins in September, therefore September begins the most wonderful time of the year. In September itself, there are two major Jewish holidays: Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, known as the Day of Repentance, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. If all these holidays aren’t enough for you, the most important of them all is on Sept. 29; Mrs. Cade’s birthday! My birthday also happens to be in September, so I guess you could say September is truly the best month of the year.
September has so much to offer, and it signals the beginning of the best time of year, so there’s no reason be sad that you’re at school again. Whether you won’t leave your couch on weekends watching countless football games or you’re putting up Christmas lights on Labor Day, September is a fun-filled month for everyone.
