Raiders to San Antonio?

On Friday, Henry Cisneros, along with other San Antonio officials traveled to Oakland to meet with Raiders officials to speak about a possible move to San Antonio. About two months ago, Raiders owner Mark Davis visited the Alamo City to see for himself what the city had to offer. They took an aerial tour of the city, as well as making a visit to the Alamodome. Raiders officials also later came to the UTSA Roadrunners home game against the Arizona Wildcats to see the turnout, and to see whether San Antonio is ready for football.

Davis has said he wants to keep the Raiders in Oakland. With their lease at the O.CO Coliseum in Oakland, which they already share with the Athletics ending after this season, and no plans for a new stadium, they have reason to look elsewhere. Rumor has it that the Raiders might ultimately end up moving back to Los Angeles, but I think San Antonio is the next home for the Raiders.

First off, watching a Raiders home game the first two months of the season while the A’s are still playing is awful. They are playing on a baseball field. It not only looks bad on TV, but no NFL should share a field, both for safety, and professionalism. It feels as if they’re a little league team just playing for fun on any field they can find. Another reason is, even though they have very hard core, loyal fans, they have had to tarp out part of their coliseum in order to sell out games. Having to lower seating capacity in order to sell out is pretty embarrassing, even if you’re 0-8. In San Antonio, fans have been waiting decades for an NFL team. Fans will have no trouble filling the Alamodome week in and week out. Plus, black and silver follows the city color scheme. Look at how San Antonio fans support the Spurs. They are some of the most loyal fans out there.

San Antonio is ready for football. Yes, Cowboys and Texans fans dominate the city, but if the Raiders make a move, so will lots of fans. So Mark Davis, think long and hard. San Antonio is the place to be.
