Saturday was the last night of swimming at the 2016 Rio Olympic Olympic games. That meant it was also time for Michael Phelps’s last Olympic swim (or so we think,) and it was a thrilling end to an amazing career.
Phelps was the the third swimmer in the 4 x 100 meter medley relay, performing his signature butterfly stroke. He gave the United States the lead, and they brought home gold yet again in Rio. It was a fitting end to Phelps’s career. The win on Saturday gave Phelps his 23rd gold medal, and 28th overall medal. He is without a doubt the best swimmer of all-time, and in my eyes, definitely the best Olympian of all-time. What he has done over five Olympics, under a huge spotlight, is incredible. It’s something we’ll never see again.
It’s been a dominant swimming session for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team in Rio. They won 33 medals at the Aquatics Stadium, with Phelps capping off another medal-filled perfromance Saturday. Along with the relay team that included Phelps, Cody Miller, Ryan Murphy, and Nathan Adrian, history-maker Simone Manuel brought home a silver, Connor Jaeger won a silver, and the relay team of Simone Manuel, Dana Vollmer, Kathleen Baker, and Lilly King won gold. The swim team has more than half of the total U.S. medals. Looks like their training camp in San Antonio went well.
Day nine of the Olympics is sure to bring more excitement. Simone Biles begins individual competition, and Usain Bolt looks to hold on to his title as “Fastest Man on Earth.” The only thing missing? Swimming, which has ended after a fun-filled week in the pool.
Great job!!
