The start of football season certainly didn’t disappoint. It’s been a long time coming, but the season kicked off with a bang.
On Friday night, my high school team, the Alamo Heights Mules, defeated the Brandeis Broncos 27-20 in a thrilling game that went down to the wire. I believe it’s the best game I’ve personally attended in my life. The school announced a move of the student section next to the band and Spurs Dancers, and it made the atmosphere incredible. The students, including me, stood all game, and we all went crazy as the Mules pulled out a late victory over a much bigger, and supposedly better team.
Then on Saturday, college football began with some great games and upsets. However, while the big games were on TV, I went to the UTSA Roadrunners game at the Alamodome, as they beat the Alabama State Hornets 26-13. I wasn’t expecting a large crowd, but 22,380 fans dressed in orange brought a noisy environment to the home opener. I was pleasantly surprised at this big crowd against a no-name opponent, and it should be a good sign for the game against Arizona State Friday September 16th on ESPN. Come on out to the Alamodome!
Finally, to cap off my weekend of football, Texas faced #10 Notre Dame in a highly anticipated match-up of two iconic programs. My family drove to San Marcos to one of our favorite restaurants, Pluckers, for my pre-birthday dinner, and then we drove back home to watch the game comfortably. It was an amazing, back-and-forth game, but Texas won in overtime in dramatic fashion in front of over more than a record 102,000 fans in Austin. The win marked the return of Texas football, and it also marked the third win for my third team this weekend.
One team won on Friday, another on Saturday, and the last on Sunday. Not often can I say ALL my teams won, but for this weekend, maybe as a birthday gift, they finally did.
