Miguel Gonzalez shuts down Reds

On the road in Houston, Miguel Gonzalez stops by to talk to his friend Brian Yancelson.

The Orioles continued there run towards an AL East crown, with a dominant performance from Miguel Gonzalez. Gonzalez threw his first career complete game shutout, and helped the O’s cruise to there 8th consecutive home series win.

It started as an early pitchers duel, but the Orioles took care of that real quickly. Jonathan Schoop, for the second straight night, homered into the the Reds bullpen. Later, David Lough, who started because of having success against Reds starter Dylan Axelrod, also homered giving the O’s a 2-0 lead. Buck Showalter just keeps pressing the right buttons. Chris Davis kept the homer barrage going with an opposite field two run homer making it 4-0 Orioles.

That’s all Gonzalez needed. He had what might have been the best performance from an Oriole starter all year. If there is any Oriole who deserves success, Miguel Gonzalez is that guy. I met him personally in Houston and Dallas, and he is such a nice guy on the field and off. It’s good to see him pitching well.

The Orioles today reached the 81 win mark, so one more win gives them a third straight winning season for the first time since 1992-94. The O’s are now 81-57, and remain 9.5 games over the Yankees. Their magic number to clinch the division is just 16 games.
