Beginning on Thursday August 6th, and going until Monday August 11, the Phillips 66 Senior National Swimming Championships will take place at the sparkling Northside Swim Center in San Antonio, Texas. Highlighting the participants, is the most decorated Olympic swimmer of all-time, Michael Phelps. Phelps, who retired after the 2012 Olympics, is trying to make a comeback and qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.
“I am just excited to swim. This is kind of what I was preparing for, really, the whole entire year,” Phelps said.
Phelps swimming in San Antonio adds another highlight in what is a big year for San Antonio swimming. Before the senior championships, San Antonio hosted the Speedo Junior National Swimming Championships. On August 17-22, the Northside Swim Center will also host the World Deaf Swimming Championships. No wonder people are calling it the “year of swim” in San Antonio.
Although San Antonio lost the bid to host the Olympic Trials, the U.S. National Team chose the Alamo City as it’s domestic training site before they head off to Rio. For San Antonio to host such prestigious events shows the growth of the city, and its ability to host world class events. Hopefully the NFL and MLB are paying attention to what’s going on in the Alamo City.
