In between the Land of 10,000 Lakes and the Rocky Mountains was a quick but fantastic stop at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Just like the Field of Dreams, that will also get its own post, but for now, welcome to Denver!
First things first when arriving to Coors Field, home of the Rockies, was parking at the stadium and then walking to a restaurant across the street. There were several fun looking restaurants in the area, so we just chose one and walked up to our table on the rooftop with a direct view of the stadium. It doesn’t get better than that! We ordered, but quickly after that, my mom and I took off on one of our crazy ideas. We made our way to the ticket gate all the way on the other side of the stadium exactly two hours before the game to try and get our hands on some “Rockpile” tickets. These were tickets offered for $1 (yup!) but you could only get them at this exact gate, and they sold on a first-come first-served basis, but you better believe my mom and I were getting those tickets.
We rushed to the gate and luckily got all the tickets we needed for, wait for it, $4. A steal! Back we went now to the restaurant where dinner had been served… awhile ago. Our food was quite cold, but who cares, we got our tickets in the Rockpile!
After eating it was time to go in the stadium. It was still pretty early, so we did some walking before the game actually started. The must-visit was the row of purple seats in the upper deck that mark points in the stadium that are exactly one mile high. So cool! Everywhere you went in this stadium there were reminders of 5,280 feet to make sure you don’t forget just how high in altitude Denver is.
Before getting to our seats, Adrian of course had to go try the infamous Rocky Mountain Oysters. You might ask, Oysters at a baseball stadium? Well, it gets better than that, or worse depending how you look at it. Rocky Mountain Oysters are the code name for fried bull testicles. Hard pass for me, but Adrian jumped right in. You’ll have to ask him how they are, and on his birthday no less!
Finally it was time to sit in our section, the Rockpile. While getting $1 tickets is the best deal you’ll ever find, there’s a reason they’re $1. The seats are about a mile away, not just mile high, from home plate. But who cares! We’re here to enjoy the stadium. Plus, you get to sit right behind the little garden with fountains the Rockies have, so that’s fun to look at all game.
Another highlight of this game for us was getting to catch up with some great friends, both Danny’s college roommate and the daughters of some of our very best friends who live in the Denver area. Baseball, friends and family; the tickets may have been $1, but the experience was truly priceless.
