What an amazing way to wake up this morning at 8:00am, with my dad giving me the news that Chris Davis has re-signed with the Baltimore Orioles. I couldn’t believe it! I was so excited, I couldn’t go back to sleep. All off-season, the Orioles negotiated with Davis’s agent Scott Boras for a contract. It looked like the O’s were getting restless, but they were finally able to agree on a 7 year-$161 million deal.
This is a huge signing not only for the Orioles team in 2016, which is now a lot better than it was last night, but resigning Davis is big for the franchise, the clubhouse, the fans, and the city of Baltimore. A year after losing Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz, this was a big statement from the Orioles management to step up and almost double their largest contract in franchise history. Adam Jones, at $85 million, was their previous high, but this contract shows just how valuable Davis is to the Orioles.
By no means should the Orioles be done shopping, as they still need a starting pitcher and possibly another corner outfielder, but the Orioles suddenly look like a much better team now that “Crush” Davis is back in the Charm City.
